Event Type: Hybrid Event, 2 Team Members

Short Description: Teams will complete a written test on simple and compound machine concepts and construct a lever-based measuring device prior to the tournament to determine the mass ratios between three test masses.

Materials: Collection of notes, 2 calculators, pre-built device

General Overview:

• Part 1: Written Test- Questions about simple and compound machines, like mechanical advantage, efficiency, potential and kinetic energy, Newton’s laws of motion, inertia, etc. and basic algebra, geometry, trig, and vectors.

• Part 2: Device Testing- Determine ratios of masses of 3 unknown objects, using a lever they built. The score for this section is based on accuracy and time.
